Quava Vocal Group’s youngest music arranger and composer, Thabo Matshego speaks about his success as an upcoming artist.

The Bramley resident said as a child he was always drawn to music but did not have the correct language to attribute his appreciation for music through harmonies.

“It was only in Grades 9 and 10 my active journey with music began which is also when I was heavily involved at church. Gospel music really resonated with me and that is what prompted me to start singing; it is also when I started singing that I understood how harmony worked.”

Matshego explained that after being exposed to music at church, he immersed himself in spaces that would provide him with opportunities to arrange music which eventually led him to join the Quava Vocal Group.

The 29-year-old said he was elated with the fundamental role he played in arranging some of the African music for the Quava Vocal Group’s repertoire on the debut album.

“In terms of arranging and the process that I followed for the album, there wasn’t a specific process for all the songs on the album. Different song ideas came to me in unique ways. For example, the idea for ‘Siyamazi uMelusi’ came to me in a dream. When I woke up from the dream, I recalled all the parts which I then quickly recorded on my phone.”

The Quava Vocal Group member concluded, “working with international choirs and singing my music has been extremely amazing. A lot of the connections with the choirs happened through social media. I most definitely plan to work with international choirs as I think the opportunities are there and I am super excited about the journey.”
