Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku reflects on the year

Belinda Echeozonjoku works closely with the JMPD to address the issue of public drinking in the ward.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku highlights the ward’s highs and lows.

Echeozonjoku said it has been an eventful year for the ward.

“I created 14 Whatsapp groups across the 22 suburbs in the ward and committed to updating the groups regularly. We had the unfortunate incident in Venus Avenue, Melrose, where a car ran into a collapsed stormwater drain, which prompted a further escalation to the executive mayor’s office.”

The councillor added that the opening of Shoprite in Balfour Park resulted in employment for the youth in the community which would make a difference in people’s lives.

She explained that the ward battled with illegal dumping.

“We had three major integrated clean-up operations coordinated by Pikitup and other stakeholders. Through these operations the stormwater drains that were blocked by plastic from recyclers were unblocked.”

Echeozonjoku concluded that she was in support of the SmartHood Safer Hood pilot between James & Ethel Gray Park Foundation & VumaCam which will be rolled out from January 2023 and hopefully this will assist with the response time of security companies to hotspots across the ward.
