Waverly resident unimpressed with JRA turnaround time

JRA is exploring alternative materials to use and replace cast iron manhole covers.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) promises to replace a missing manhole cover on the corner of Merriman and Hamlin Avenue, Waverly.

Speaking on November 23, local resident Martin Urry expressed his frustration about an exposed stormwater drain.

“The missing manhole cover was reported several times in the last two years to the JRA but nothing has been done. The exposed stormwater drain poses a threat to the public because people could walk through it and injure themselves.”

JRA assistant manager, Lucia Mhlanga said inspectors committed to attend to the exposed stormwater drain in Waverly on November 29.

Mhlanga added that matters such as missing manholes were detected during inspection routines.

“Inspectors added the issue to the list of other issues that they need to attend to after conducting inspections. Oftentimes, residents themselves alert the JRA about an issue by logging a complaint with the entity’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Unit. After logging the complaint, the community member is issued with a reference number that they will use to make follow-ups with.”

JRA’s assistant manager noted that the JRA loses a lot of manhole covers due to thieves stealing and selling them for less than what they are worth because they are cast iron.

Mhlanga concluded that it usually took two weeks to address manhole cover problems.

“In a case like this one where the problem at hand poses serious harm or threat to the safety and lives of community members, the matter is given priority and attended to promptly. If an issue can be regarded as low risk or pose minimal or no threat to the safety and lives of community members, such an issue is added to the list of issues that need to be attended to. In cases where there are a lot of issues to be attended to, it may take more than the normal two weeks to address the matter.”
