Norwood police ask community members to help catch cellphone theft suspect

Norwood police caught one of two suspects in the act of snatching a cellphone from a worker on the street while the other suspect ran away.

Norwood police are appealing to community members to help find a second suspect after one was arrested for the theft of a cell phone.

Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha reported that on October 12 at about 10:00, a car with two occupants was driving along Murray Street, near the intersection with Athol Road in Highlands North.

Masotsha said, “Then one of the occupants jumped out and snatched an expensive cellphone from one of the contractor workers who were busy working on the street… A chase between them and local security members [ensued] till the suspects lost control and [crashed into] the robot on Athol Road, corner Louis Botha Avenue in Highlands North. The driver of the car jumped out and ran away whereas the other occupant was trapped in the car.”

When Norwood police arrived on the scene, the suspect had been arrested by the security officers and he was transported to Norwood Police Station cells to be detained.

The spokesperson said the vehicle was impounded. Norwood police urged anyone who has had their belongings snatched, especially around the Waverley area, to come forward and chat with the head of detectives Lieutenant Colonel Nthabeleng Mahoa or phone 011 483 4609/14.

The suspect would appear in court on charges of common robbery.
