Puntans Hill Sports Club makes alot of progress in five years

Director of Puntans Hill Sports Club says a lot more investment in needed for the club’s facility in Hawkins Estate to be up to standard.

The Puntans Hill Sports Club is a non-profit company that serves the cricketing needs of the central Johannesburg community.

The Director of the club based at Hilson Park, Hawkins Estate, Sean Naidoo, shared that they found the facility in a state of disrepair when they moved in five years ago.

“We found a poorly maintained cricket pitch which we have re-laid at the cost of R17 000 as well as installed brand new cricket nets at a cost of R38 000. Further to this, we have invested another R75 000 in refurbishing the clubhouse which had not been used at all until this year. The ladies’ and men’s toilets were in an atrocious condition and the building was in a poor state with a leaking roof and legacy furniture and infrastructure in serious decay,” said Naidoo.

He added that the clubhouse requires further investment and cricket fields need proper seats and player accommodation spaces.

As a cricket club, Naidoo said Puntans has grown from a single team affiliated with the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) cricket board to four teams that will challenge in various Saturday leagues in the 2022/2023 season.

“To date, Puntans have won five cricket trophies in our short history which we are very proud of. We have launched the Puntans Betterman Programme that serves the needs of the young men and women in our sports club from a career and academic point of view. Several of our youngsters have completed their academic studies and have been successfully employed,” Naidoo said.

So far this year, the Puntans’s greatest achievement has been winning three league trophies including a T20 CGL trophy as well as a recognition award for driving tangible transformation in cricket in the province.

Naidoo said, “Puntans intends to promote cricket as a fun family activity through the launch of the Puntans Backyard Cricket tournament which aims to promote cricket inclusion of all family members while assisting local home enterprises and businesses to get their businesses back on track.

“We intend promoting health and wellness amongst the local community members and are in the planning phase of introducing fitness and other group exercises for the community to participate in on non-cricket playing days.”

The director said they will focus on partnering with big businesses to drive funding support for their cricket-playing activities as well as to fund the academic programmes for their young adults.
