Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said the sports event was held on August 20. He said the two members trained under the coordinator of sports in SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Essau Miya of Norwood Police Station.

The spokesperson reported that Constable Rirhandzu Rhangani claimed the first victory of the day in the 8km sub-veteran category. Stakeholder security officer James Mgcina bagged second in the same race.

He said both members were selected for the CGA team to participate in the Athletics South Africa cross-country championships on September 17 in Rustenburg. Both members came second in their respective categories.

“These are the dedicated members of Gauteng athletics who never gave up in training even during the pandemic and trained hard to achieve what they did. They sacrificed their four off days and went for training. Members of SAPS who participate in different sports are always physically fit to fight crime at any given time.. therefore other SAPS members are encouraged to participate in sports to remain fit at all times,” said Masotsha.
