Greenside hosts Rescue Expo

This year is the Rescue Expo's inaugural year. The organisation aims to continue annually in October to commemorate Animal Day.

The Rescue Expo aims to create awareness for small animal welfare organisations and encourage collaboration among them.

Speaking at the Pirates Sports Club on October 9, the Rescue Expo’s veterinary nurse Jennifer Gerner said it was the organisation’s first event.

“This is our inaugural year, meaning this is our first time hosting the Rescue Expo and we hope it continues to be an annual event every October which coincides with World Animal Day in October and we’ll see how the response is. If it is great, we will continue to host more events.”

Gerner added, “We came up with the idea of the event because there are so many small animal welfare organisations that don’t have the support and exposure they require in the public and we wanted to bring like-minded people together to collaborate and exchange ideas.”

Vesper On Wheels founder Judy Jooste said these expos were necessary to teach the public about different animal organisations that existed.

“Such expos are important because with our organisation we try to make awareness around the fact that you don’t have to put your dog down after it is disabled. Most pet owners gravitate towards putting their pets down once it is disabled because of the costs involved.”

Jooste added, ” Our organisation is there to talk pet owners through difficult situations, we can help with funding, and we can provide owners with wheels. We donate the wheels and ask people to re-donate them once the dog has died.”
