Twitter user lambasts Rosebank Police Station for mistreatment

A Twitter user posted about how she had been allegedly mistreated at the Rosebank Police Station after going to enquire about a released accused perpetrator.

In a Twitter post that went viral, a social media user posted about how she had been mistreated at the Rosebank Police Station.

Twitter user @LGebsy on September 21, tagged the South African Police Service and tweeted, “Something has to be done about Rosebank Police Station. I have never cried so much, fearing for my life inside the police station. All I got was, ‘you have to go home and come back when you [‘re] done crying because this is not a creche’,”.

The Twitter user further wrote that this was after the police had released someone who broke into her house and tried to kill her without even communicating with her. The complainant said the police had completely refused to take a protection order and would ask the investigating officer to call her back. She further said when calling the police station, they [police officers] refused to give the investigating officer the phone and was never present at the station when @LGebsy went there.

Rosebank Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Bongi Mdletshe said the matter had reached their attention and they were currently investigating. “What we are investigating are the accusations by the lady regarding the officer whom she says mistreated her. As soon as we have something from that investigation then we will release a statement and proper protocol will be followed in dealing with the officer.

Concerning the release of the suspect, we would like to make it very clear that the Rosebank Police Station did its duty and arrested the suspect who spent the night of September 18 in our police cells. The suspect had been arrested under charges of domestic violence and causing grievous bodily harm. The following day he stood before the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court and the court released him and this has nothing to do with the police,” explained Warrant Officer Mdletshe.
