Long-time resident and owner of Sandton’s oldest theatre, the Theatre On The Square, Daphne Kuhn, shares what she loves about her community.

Q: How long have you been part of the Sandton community?
A: I have been part of the Sandton community for 46 years, for all of my married life.

Q: What is one of your earliest memories of Sandton?
A: Remembering the open fields of Sandown and Morningside, the stables, Grayston kennels and seeing adult and child equestrians enjoying their out-rides. I remember taking a helicopter to the airport from a helipad next to the clinic in West Street – and watching Sandton City being built. Happy memories are also of my children at Sandown Primary School, bringing them regularly to the Sandton Library and having loads of family and friends living nearby in the beautiful suburbs of Sandton.

Q: How would you say that you have contributed to the community over the years?
A: I believe that in my own small way I have given Sandton a cultural heart and soul by developing a theatre for the upliftment, education and entertainment of all through the medium of drama, comedy and music; for generating work opportunities for the performing arts community; by being a ‘voice’ in the development of new South African plays and by providing a venue with an infrastructure for corporate events and youth theatre.

Q: What is one of your favourite things about the community?
A: That the community embraces diversity, is happy, stylish, proud and aspirational.

Q: What is one of your favourite places to visit in Sandton?
A: The Nelson Mandela Square which is abuzz with multi-cultural activities and art exhibitions, in addition to having a Theatre on the Square!

Q: Where is your favourite place to get a good meal in Sandton?
A: My husband and I like to go for walks with our children and grandchildren, followed by a good meal at Truffles on the Park, Milkbar at George Lea Park or pizzas at Cafe28 on the golf course in Inanda.
