Are women celebrated enough or only on Women’s month?

Charlotte Nsubuga Mukasa said, "If we want to change the girl child’s future, we’re going to have to change the way we look at gender-equality at a policy level and change the conversations being had at social places."

South Africa will celebrate Women’s Day on August 9 and the theme will be Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights for an Equal Future.

The Rosebank Gazette team asked guests at the GSport business advancement breakfast at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium what Women’s Day meant to them and if the country would have an equal future.

CHARLOTTE NSUBUGA MUKASA: I believe gender equality and inclusion has made tremendous advancement. When it comes to the gender pay gap, we’ve only changed policies recently and still have a long way to go.
LESEGO POOE: Women’s Month is a reminder of how great women are. GSport is necessary because that’s where equality chats are started and practised.
KGOTHATSO MONTJANE: Women’s Month means strength, effort, and unity to me. There will be equality in society if women keep fighting and stay encouraged to want equality.
BABSIE KUTWANA: I don’t think we will have an equal future, it’s 2022 and women are still struggling for opportunities in boardrooms or for equal pay.
NATALIE DU TOIT: Being at the GSport business advancement breakfast is wonderful because you see everything happening in practice about what businesses have been doing for athletes which is a step in the equality direction.
CHRISTA KGAMPHE: Women should be celebrated throughout the year, we shouldn’t have hype only then. Things are seemingly changing in different industries and people are realizing the power of women.
THALEA SMIDT: Women’s Month means the celebration of women in every sphere. In terms of equality, we are making strides but we have a long way to go.
