To create opportunities for girls in the world of rugby

Chanel of Pirates Club commits to developing young girls' skills into professional rugby players.

Driven by a desire and passion to grow the rugby girls’ team at Pirates Club, Chanel Alberts’s ambition is undimmed.

Being involved in rugby for nine years, coaching the forwards of the Golden Lions women’s team and being the Mastercard Rugby ambassador, Alberts wants to create more opportunities for girls in the world of women’s rugby.

She said they started junior rugby last year and they had a good response with their youngest girls aged five. “Girls have limited opportunities to play at school level and we want Pirates to be a base for their development,” she said.

Alberts added that it has been a wonderful rollercoaster journey with some challenges and amazing joys in being part of a team and working towards achieving the same goals.

“Pirates is the product of an incredible group of women who are leaders, role models, mothers as well as rugby players. I would love to see our club structure develop more players and young talent, and it would be great to see one of the junior girls play professional rugby at a competitive level in the future.”
