Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett commended community leader and Norwood Young Stars founder Venita Masisi for her effort in making the event possible.

“Over the years I have worked with Venita and seen all the initiatives she was a part of and she’s made so much progress and growth. Norwood Young Stars, which is a soccer club, is an example of her work growing. Her whole focus is purely on the children. She does everything she can to get the community involved, the wider community too with sponsors and fights tirelessly to make it possible,” said Huggett.

“At Navayuga, we believe that social development is critical in this country, and because we’re based in the precinct of Norwood we found it important to contribute to a local NPO in the area too as a way of giving back to the community. We have invested heavily in soccer development, and what this does is keep children off the streets, and we really keen to focus their time on productive activities.”

Masisi said she was proud the fun day was a success due to the stakeholders who were onboard. “Navayuga Infotech sponsored the event and Bidvest sponsored the soccer kits and other things. I like hosting such events because I like bringing the community together and let them enjoy the activities of these events.”

Samuel Mguni of South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) said such events helped them reach out to the youth to educate them about their services. Mguni spoke about staying away from drugs and focused his talk on fitness.

Mguni said, “Covid-19 has changed a lot of people’s perspectives. People who were passionate and driven felt like the pandemic was the end of the world for them, so drug use in the youth has gone up because of the situations that they find themselves in. Our objective as Sanca is to show people that there’s always life even in crisis, you have to focus and be passionate.”
