Perpetrators of crime feel the heat

Suspects arrested and goods recovered during police operation in Kew.

Police arrested two suspects, a man and a woman in two separate incidents in the Bramley policing precinct.

According to Bramley police spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi, the police were visiting second-hand dealers in the area, conducting compliance inspections as well as checking for stolen goods when they arrested the woman. During the inspection, the police found rolls of copper wire at a scrap metal dealer.

The 35-year-old woman who was at work at the time, could not produce any form of documents to prove legal possession of the copper. She was arrested and detained at Bramley Police Station.

“Still in Kew, a 31-year-old man was found busy operating in one of the scrap metal shops when the team of police officers arrived. They inspected the shop and found suspected stolen goods [scaffolding] which the dealer was unable to account for. The scaffolding was seized and the owner arrested,” said Mogodi.

He added that both suspects would appear in court soon. “The criminals who are stealing or even damaging the essential infrastructure are now feeling uncomfortable following the newly established team within Johannesburg north sub-district.

The team is tasked with the responsibility to eradicate copper cable theft, damage to infrastructure and other related matters.”

He said on May 16, the same team visited another scrap metal dealer in Kew to conduct an inspection. “It is alleged that the dealer disappeared when he saw the police coming. The police recovered copper and an assortment of tools. No one was arrested. The matter is being investigated.”
