Young leaders from Victory Park plan to change their community
De La Salle Holy Cross College learners share on they hope to achieve through their work with the Johanneburg Junior City Council.
De La Salle Holy Cross College learners Isabella Manas and Miquela Ndjo are excited at the possibilities they have to make a difference in communities across the city as members of the Johannesburg Junior City Council.
The pair shared how they felt being selected to be part of the council and what they hoped to achieve. For Isabella, it was a privilege to be part of something so great and meaningful. Miquela echoed similar sentiments adding they would now work towards becoming the sort of young leaders who brought about change in their communities.
This year’s council motto is Humanity with humility can change a community. For Miquela, this resonated deeply with her as, through it, she plans to ’empower and help resolve the problems that all youth face daily, especially to be an example for the youth who can’t voice their situations nor opinions openly’.
As they are also on the environmental committee, Isabella will seek aid to effect tangible change in our environment, with the firm vision to plant more trees, clean neglected parks, create sustainable vegetable gardens and ensure the environment is healthier for future generations.
It is no surprise that Isabella wants to leave a positive legacy as her grandmother, brother and cousin were, too, in their generations, part of the junior council, “I know how much this meant to them and how instrumental it was in moulding them into the people they are today. It has been something I have always dreamed of becoming a part of.”
