Help and safe space are available for people suffering from mental illness

According to Mary Anne Dobrovic of Sabda, locals showed support for the home.

South African Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders Alliance (Sabda) is an NPO that provides a safe home for people suffering from mental illness.

Sabda hosted a fundraising event at the Carreria Centre on Pine Avenue in Ferndale. The event took place in partnership with Goodman’s Butchery, where they sold boerewors rolls to residents.

The manager of the Sabda home, Mary Anne Dobrovic, said the event aimed to raise funds for some of their needs.

“Due to Covid-19 and its effects, the home has suffered financial loss as well as a decrease in the number of residents in the past two years,” Dobrovic added.

She added said that their volunteer students from the South African College of Applied Psychology, Daniela and Hannah, came up with the fundraising idea as part of their community service project.

“The event was a success, we received donations and support from the residents. “To top it all off, the wonderful butchers were generous enough to donate the meat needed for the day.”
