Football club aims to develop youth potential

An ambition to bring home some big leagues is on the cards for the club.

A non-governmental organisation is determined to develop the soccer skills of the youth.

Opopo Football Club is a community-based club that trains at Zoo Lake Sports Club in Parkview. The founder of the club Gaston Takor said most of the club members came from Parkview, Parkhurst, Rosebank as well as Braamfontein.

“Football does not have a boundary, whenever one has potential, they must take action and opportunities to realise their dreams,” said Takor.

Age groups from U11 up to the senior team participate. “We have individuals from 15 years old whom we brought to train with the senior team and in the coming years they will play with the senior team.”

He added that currently, the senior team was playing in the South African Breweries Regional League which is the fourth division of domestic football in South Africa.

“We are currently number one on the log, fighting for promotion. We’re left with four games to go. After the four games, we will be going for play-offs. Who knows, we might bring the ABC Motsepe League to Zoo Lake, which is our ambition. We try to create a platform for the young boys that come from the development side, where they will get into the senior team in professional football.”

He added that they also created opportunities for the boys by sending them to different clubs for training.

The senior team trains on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with coach Ferdinand Ndi while the junior team trains at Mandela Bridge on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
