60 students admitted to hospital following suspected gas leak in Parktown

PARKTOWN – ER 24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that paramedics set up a triage area and began to tend to the patients, assessing approximately 170 people.

A suspected gas leak at a university residence in Parktown saw at least 60 people transported to nearby hospitals.

According to ER24’s Russel Meiring from the communication’s office, City of Johannesburg EMS, ER24, and other services were called to the scene shortly before 18:00 on February 20 after numerous students complained of shortness of breath.

“On arrival, emergency workers found that numerous students aged 18 and upwards had already evacuated the buildings and were now crowding the sidewalk and street. Medics set up a triage area and began to tend to the patients, assessing approximately 170 people,” explained Meiring.

Meiring added that after the assessments, medics transported roughly 60 patients to hospitals in the area. The remaining patients declined further treatment or transportation to a hospital.

The exact details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
