Tips to keep your vehicle and valuables safe

PARKVIEW – Parkview police offered a number of tips to keep your vehicle and valuables therein safe.

After seeing an increase in reported cases of theft out of or from motor vehicles around the Parkview policing precinct, Parkview police offered a number of safety tips.

A spokesperson for Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “The police issue safety tips for the residents and motorists and preventative measures for theft of, from and out of the motor vehicle.”

  • Ensure your vehicle is locked and your alarm system is activated, even if you will only be away from the vehicle for a few minutes
  • Ensure windows and doors are properly closed and locked
  • Never leave valuables such as jewellery, laptops, cellphones and handbags unattended. It is important to leave valuable items out of sight
  • Never leave your car unattended, even for a few minutes
  • An audible alarm, which activates as soon as the door or window is opened or broken attracts attention – something a criminal does not want
  • The quicker a stolen vehicle is reported, the better the chance of recovery
  • Always make every effort to park behind a locked gate
  • Avoid parking the vehicle on the street or driveway as suspects see the opportunity to break into the car
  • Avoid putting items in the vehicle while anyone is watching as culprits see an opportunity to break into the vehicle.
