Get your hands dirty at Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW – On the action day, volunteers will place geocell in that area, fill it with soil and compost and lay the biojute to secure the soil and compost before planting.

Community members are urged to join the Erosion Action Day at Zoo Lake on February 18 between 08:30 and 14:00.

Chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Committee Fran Haslam explained that the team would begin to prepare the last area on the southeast side of the lake for rehabilitation on February 14.

“The area is approximately 220 square metres. We will be clearing and cleaning the area, placing the soil into that area and installing the last two gabion baskets and filling them with gabion rocks,” said Haslam.

She said that on the action day, volunteers will place geocell in that area, fill it with soil and compost and lay the BioJute to secure the soil and compost before planting. “We appeal to all residents and the community to get involved and help make a difference at Zoo Lake,” said Haslam.

Locals can assist by volunteering their time on the day and/or donating money or the following items:

  • Gabion rock – four cubic metres are required to fill the baskets
  • Gabion baskets – two are required to complete the gabion wall
  • Topsoil/compost – 30 cubic metres
  • Paving – permeable paving for around the benches and repairing the pathway
  • Stakes – 300 stakes are required to secure the geocell and BioJute
  • The use of a TLB for three days
  • The use of a hand compressor for a day
  • Drinks and snacks for volunteers
  • Labour during the week of February 14 to help move rocks, build gabion baskets, move soil etc.
