Closer than a brother – friends rise up for Corbin Parker

GREENSIDE – The Pirates Beach Arena will host a volleyball tournament on 28 November, 10:00 to raise funds to help Corbin Parker, recently injured in a serious accident in Amsterdam.

When Cays Margison and boyfriend Aston Schafer heard their good friend Corbin Parker had been in an accident in Amsterdam, Netherlands, their worlds were shaken.

Parker, Margison explained, was as a brother to Schafer. “Aston and Corbin and have been best friends for over eight years and Aston is now Corbin’s chosen family,” she told the Gazette. As ‘family’ to Corbin, the couple immediately knew they would do everything in their strength to help him in his fight to reclaim his life.

Parker fell from a balcony onto concrete at the end of October: “He sustained several life-changing injuries and has since had surgery on his head and back,” said Margison. “He is currently in hospital undergoing observation for head injuries, a broken back and a damaged spine, and will remain there for the next several weeks.”

Margison explained they had set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding account, and while having raised 10 000 Euros to help, Parker needed a further 20 000 Euros toward his rehabilitation.

This was when they approached the Pirates Beach Arena whose management agreed to assist with the fundraising toward the worthy cause.

A volleyball tournament will be held at the Greenside venue on November 28, from 10:00 to raise money for Parker – and the community is invited to attend.

Margison said as a result of the accident, Parker had been unable to walk and doctors were unsure whether he would be able to do so again.
“He is fighting hard and will continue to do so until he is strong enough to be in a rehabilitation centre,” she said.

She continued, “Anyone who has met Corbin will have every faith in his will and effort to recover.
But we need to raise the funds to allow him to put up his best fight.”

She said all funds from the volleyball tournament would be used towards helping Parker.
Teams can be entered and the cost is R100 per person. “It will be a day of fun, drinks, braai and good music.”
