A closer look at Rosebank’s transport system

ROSEBANK – The Rosebank Transport Indaba, hosted by the Rosebank Management District, provided fresh insights into the area's transport system.

Guests of the Rosebank Transport Indaba, hosted by the Rosebank Management District (RMD), were provided with some interesting facts about the area’s existing transport system.

In Your Pocket City Guides collaborated with RMD in orchestrating the event.

Rosebank taxi rank has 32 bays, which currently service 500 taxis. Up to 350 taxis enter the area daily, and 150 taxis travel to Illovo. A transport study proposing a new taxi rank was delivered to the City of Joburg in 2010.

Rosebank is well-serviced by different e-hailing and meter taxi services but has no official rank or demarcated area for passengers to wait or disembark.

The Rosebank Gautrain station opened in 2010, and has links to four feeder buses. The station has its own car park offering discounted rates for Gautrain users.

New midi-bus routes from Rosebank are planned, with existing routes to be revised by the end of 2021. From information supplied by Gautrain, 59% of new office developments in South Africa occurred in areas where there were Gautrain stations (since 2010). About 16.7% of these are within a 2km radius of Rosebank station.

In 2021, on average six motor vehicle accidents were reported per month in the district with most incidents occurring on road corners. The highest number of accidents take place on Jan Smuts Avenue, Oxford Road, Sturdee Avenue and Baker Street.

Illegal parking hotspots in the area include Jellicoe Avenue and Biermann Avenue (taxi rank overspill), Cradock Avenue (predominantly e-hailing and delivery vehicles), Tyrwhitt Avenue and the area adjacent to the Gautrain stations on Oxford Road (predominantly e-hailing and delivery vehicles).

Rosebank also has one publicly accessible bicycle rack, positioned on the pedestrianised section of Tyrwhitt Avenue, opposite McDonalds in The Zone@Rosebank.

In Your Pocket City Guides, publisher of Johannesburg In Your Pocket works with RMD to help provide facts and information on the area, as well as to provide guided walks through the area, training and informing Rosebank residents and area ambassadors.
