Possible solutions for Rosebank’s transport using collaboration and computer technology

ROSEBANK – Possible solutions for Rosebank's transport, using collaboration and computer technology.

Steve Sutcliffe, founder of Trafficon, explained that through using technology one could safely and effectively analyse solutions and alternative approaches to transport in the Rosebank area, before these were practically implemented.

He was addressing delegates to the Rosebank Transport Indaba at the Southern Sun in Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank on October 29. The event was hosted by the Rosebank Management District (RMD).

He said that Trafficon had been involved in the development of traffic and transport solutions for many years and that transport issues were vital and could not be separated from the urban fabric of Rosebank.

He said one of the ways Trafficon sought solutions to transport issues was to create the transport ‘reality’ of Rosebank on computer and through these simulated environments, to imagine different outcomes of adjustments and advancements to the traffic and transport systems of the area.

“Computer simulation allows us to test alternatives,” he explained, putting up a computerised video of the area using computer-generated taxi ranks, cars, pedestrians, shopping centres, roads, pavements and buildings. For this to happen, he said, the visions of area authorities and business operators, as well as residents needed to be considered.

He suggested to delegates that a five- to 10-year vision statement for the area needed to be drafted, considering everyone’s voices, perceptions and input. He also highlighted key roads in the Rosebank district, such as Cradock and Tyrwhitt avenues, which were popular with commuters and Uber drivers, and needed viable solutions to ease congestion.

He also highlighted the taxi rank in the area as being an essential area in Rosebank, as it allowed for a flow of business, opportunities and resources in and out of the area.
