Help make Greenside greener

GREENSIDE – The Greenside Residents Association (GRA) has asked the community to support its Greenside Greening Project

Greenside Residents Association (GRA) has been actively implementing its Greenside Greening Project by improving the public spaces of the suburb and asks the community to assist in greening the area.

The association’s chairperson Judith Ancer told the Gazette that Gleneagles Road was first upgraded by the Johannesburg Development Agency in 2020 and included a new piazza area with seating and small landscaped islands of kikuyu lawn.

“Last week, the GRA removed the lawn from the islands and replaced it with water-wise, low-maintenance succulents,” she said. “These plants were donated by various sources and included 100 spekbooms from Emmarentia Botanical Gardens.

“We have also asked for the help of the City of Johannesburg transport and roads agency to assist us protect these new green spaces by helping prevent illegal parking on the piazza, pavements and traffic islands in the area.”

She said for the next phase of the project, the association hoped to plant trees in the piazza and along Gleneagles Road, as well as do planting upgrades in Sir Lionel Phillips Park, Summerside Park and the two small parks along Greenway Road.

“These upgrades will depend on the donations and support the GRA receives,” she said.

The work is done by the members of the Green Crew who are employed on a weekly basis by the association and rely directly and solely on community funding. Their tasks include cleaning up areas, weeding and generally maintaining open areas, to make Greenside a beautiful and well-maintained suburb.

“We thank those residents who have donated to the Green Crew, and those people on the lunch roster who provide a nourishing meal to the crew on a Friday.”

“Any plant donations, tools or support [financial or otherwise] are essential to keep the Green Crew viable and to make the project happen,” said Ancer.
