Norwood taekwondo stars strike back

NORWOOD – Talented taekwondo stars from Andre's Taekwondo Academy recently gave their all in a prestigious online tournament, coming out victorious.

After more than a year without competitions, the American Taekwondo Academy South Africa (ATA SA) recently went live with their first multi-district online tournament.

Among those contending were students of Andre’s Taekwondo Academy in Norwood.

Sabumnim Andre van Tonder, founder of Andre’s Taekwondo Academy and vice-chairman of ATA SA, said he was excited that tournaments of this calibre had started again after such a long time. He said being able to compete online did have its advantages. “Being able to compete virtually made the competition more accessible to students whilst boosting their confidence,” he said.

He added that 23 students of his had competed in the tournament and between them achieved 28 gold, 20 silver and six bronze medals.

On October 23, ATA SA will host a virtual SA National Championship Event. “We are training hard for this event,” said Van Tonder. He said he could not be prouder of his students for their perseverance, dedication and loyalty during the past 18 months.
“I truly am the proudest instructor in the country.”
