A trip back in time with Joburg Heritage Tours

JOBURG – Joburg Heritage Tours is calling on residents to join in on a tour to The Stewart Memorial on Sandili’s Kop.

Joburg Heritage Tours invites residents to explore the The Stewart Memorial on Sandili’s Kop.

James Stewart was a missionary with the Free Church of Scotland, a medical doctor and served as principal of Lovedale College for a period of 35 years – from 1870 to 1905. Stewart passed away at Lovedale in 1905 and the Stewart Memorial was constructed in 1908 on the crest of Sandili’s Kop.

Join William Martinson as he relates some of Stewart’s other achievements elsewhere in Africa – but focuses primarily on the design of the Stewart Memorial by architect Orlando Middleton, its construction, its current status and a recent 3D documentation using photogrammetry from a drone.

The tour will be taking place on October 2 at 14:00 for 14:15 and is open to all.

There is a nominal fee of R60 for fully paid-up members of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Forest Town, Houghton, Kensington, Norwood, Oaklands, Observatory Estate, Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff Associations.

The tours will cost R100 to non-members and must be paid by EFT into The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation account.
