Suspected intersection criminals found with toy guns

RANDBURG – Motorists are advised to be careful along popular intersections due to the risk of crime.

Through the patrols, Linden Police Station arrested two males on the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Republic Road suspected of being involved in criminal activity.

According to the station’s Captain Alex Vermaak, the two suspects had two toy pistols and a device used to break car windows, which were seized. He said, “We strongly believe that these suspects are involved with peak time robberies at the intersections on Malibongwe Drive and Republic Road, and Malibongwe Drive and Hans Schoeman Street.”

Captain Vermaak added that of any members of the public that might have been victims to these suspects along these intersections over the last two weeks, should contact the station as they are still investigating the matter.

Police also reminded the public to be cautious and vigilant when driving as criminals will still be looking for opportunities.

The station provided the following safety tips:

  • Always lock the doors of your vehicle and keep the windows closed
  • Do not leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you think you will be away for only a minute
  • Avoid stopping at remote places
  • If a stranger wants to talk to you while you are in your vehicle, do not open the window wide – 5cm is enough to have a discussion
  • If something seems suspicious, do not talk to strangers. Rather be rude and drive away
  • Limit your trips at night or at least take someone along with you
  • Vary the route you travel to work and back, if this is possible
  • If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off if possible or press your hooter to attract attention
  • Carjackers may stage a minor accident so they can approach your car
  • Do not resist, especially if the thief has a weapon.
