Sector 4 CPF members and community keep the community clean and bright
NORWOOD – Sector 4 CPF members and community members join hands to get trash off the streets.
Community members got their hands dirty to keep Norwood clean.
A group of 20 attendees picked up litter along Louis Botha Avenue from Osborn Road up to 7th Street on August 21.
The clean-up was put together by Norwood’s Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 4 chairperson Cebi Ngqinambi who has been organising clean-ups for more than three years. Sector 4 encompasses Norwood, Orange Grove, Houghton, Fairwood, Orchards, and parts of Linksfield.
The aim of the clean-up was to involve the community in keeping their suburbs clean and to stop urban decay. “I initiate clean-up campaigns but residents are always keen to come on board and sometimes they also initiate. Over the years more and more residents have come on board and volunteer to clean up,” Ngqinambi said.
She explained that the forum uses the clean-up to foster racial, cultural diversity so everyone can get involved in addressing homelessness, substance abuse, and lawlessness. Working with Pikitup, their campaigns also include raising awareness about illegal dumping and educating people about municipal by-laws.
Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said the entitiy encourged community members to start initiatives such as these because Pikitup needs communities to help keep the city as clean as possible. Mkhwanazi added that communities are more than welcome to reach out to Pikitup to provide them with resources they may need when doing such initiatives.
The forum uses its WhatsApp group to communicate information about planned clean-up campaigns, to invite volunteers and residents can report illegal dumping on the group. The Pikitup manager for the area, Philemon Mkhari is on the group as well and promptly responds to the reports and arranges collection of the rubbish.
Ngqinambi concluded that her vision is to build a community in which we protect one another and hold each other accountable in order to uphold law and order in the area.
