Wanderers’ Emily Li set to represent South Africa

ILLOVO – Wanderers badminton player is set to represent South Africa in Benin.

Wanderers Club badminton player Yiwen Emily Li is taking international strides. Yiwen has been selected to represent South Africa in the U15 badminton team at the African Games, formerly known as the All Africa Games.

The games will take place from August 26 until August 28 in Cotonou, Benin. Yiwen started her badminton career in 2019 at Wanderers and seeing that she had lots of potential, coach David Calvert took her under his wing.

Since then, she has done well in multiple tournaments including winning the U13 and U15 section in one of them.

“When I was younger, I never really liked badminton but as I watched overseas badminton games, I realised that badminton was a unique and fun sport. I started playing and my experience has been great.

Badminton has taught me to never give up even if you lose,” said Yiwen. “I just get up and try harder. Competing on another level, especially in tournaments, involves a lot of concentration but all I think of is focusing on winning.”
