Three suspects, including a woman, were arrested following a heinous torture and assault incident just off Louis Botha Avenue in Orange Grove.
Norwood SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masothsha said the victim of the suspects had to be hospitalised following the brutal attack, in which it is alleged the perpetrators tortured him using a variety of methods including strangulation and beating him with a steel pipe.
Masothsha said the first abusive confrontation the man had with the three had been on July 24 this year at about 06:30. They had approached him on Louis Botha Avenue and after threatening him and searching him for valuables, they took off his shoes and jacket before running away.
He said the next day at about 07:00, they had again approached him on the same road, this time overpowering him and taking him to a well-known abandoned house on the corner of 6th Avenue and 7th Street, Orange Grove.
“Here, they forced him to strip naked, before assaulting him with a steel pipe, hitting him all over his body,” said Masothsha. “They also used self-made concrete to hit him on the head… threatening that they would force him to drink petrol, and accusing him of stealing cash and clothes.”
He added that the man had survived but had to be hospitalised subsequent to the assault as he had sustained serious injuries. The matter was reported to the Norwood police after the man had received medical attention, and all three suspects were arrested. They will soon appear in court on charges of assault, grievous bodily injury and armed robbery.
Masothsha appealed to the community not to take the law into their own hands. “Those who do will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
