Learners create mural to honour Madiba

PARKVIEW – The mosaic-inspired piece titled ‘The ties that bind us’ was recently installed on the school’s boundary wall on Wicklow Avenue.

Learners at Parkview Pre-Primary School worked alongside their teachers to create an art mural to honour Nelson Mandela.

The mosaic-inspired piece titled ‘The ties that bind us’ was recently installed on the school’s boundary wall on Wicklow Avenue.

Kathy Matulovich of the Parkview Pre-Primary Parents Association said the children used newspaper, magazines and other material to create a smiling Nelson Mandela wearing a bright red tie.

Matulovich added that each child was given the chance to stick a piece of material onto the mural and also draw a special picture, which has been arranged around the portrait, to thank healthcare workers who have worked tirelessly to serve the community during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Parkview Pre-Primary executive head Debbie Brown said, “We wanted to teach our young children to follow in Nelson Mandela’s footsteps and help them understand what he meant when he said, ‘It is in your hands to make a better world for all who live in it’.”

“We are teaching our children about gratitude, kindness and the belief that every person can and should create positive change.”

Brown said the children loved drawing pictures of healthcare workers and those who wer helping to keep the community safe.

“We hope it brings a smile to many people who drive and walk past our little school every day.”

The mural will remain on the school wall for the month of July.

Brown encouraged locals to visit and take note of how each person could take on Mandela’s legacy by helping to make the world a better place.
