The IEC simplifies voter registration by launching an online registration portal

JOHANNESBURG – The IEC launches a new, online registration for first-time voters.

The IEC (Electoral Commission of South Africa) has launched online registrations for first-time voters.

The new registration platform is up and running for new voters to register to vote. To access the portal, visit click on ‘Register to Vote NOW’ and follow the steps. The application process takes approximately five minutes to complete. A receipt will be sent via SMS or email to confirm the outcome of the registration process.

To apply to register, the following requirements must be met:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be at least 16 years old (you can only vote if you are 18 years or older on voting day)
  • Have a valid green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID, or valid temporary identity certificate.

South Africans who are already registered to vote but need to update their address or voting station can visit to check which voting station they should be registered at.

Voters have until August 6 to register as the voting roll closes after this date. The commission has a voter registration weekend at every voting station where residents can register to vote for the first time, re-register to vote or check their voter status on July 31 and August 1.
