Parkview Senior learners thank healthcare heroes

PARKVIEW – Grade 7 learners showed their appreciation by making cards of encouragement for healthcare workers.

Grade 7 learners at Parkview Senior School wrote cards to encourage and thank healthcare workers during the throes of the devastating Covid-19 third wave.

Grade 7 head and project coordinator Shelley Corrigan said the school was approached by a few local organisations with the invitation to make cards.

Corrigan added that upon reflection during class time, learners realised that they all knew of someone who had been affected by the Covid-19 third wave.

“We knew that we were all affected and we recognised and appreciated the extraordinary role that our healthcare workers are playing,” said Corrigan.

The Grade 7 learners spent time making cards during their test week, creating about 50 cards in total which were distributed to various hospitals in the suburbs of Rosebank, Sunninghill and at Helen Joseph Public Hospital.

Corrigan said, “The organisations running the initiative are distributing ‘goodie bags’ and cards for healthcare workers. They describe how no one is particularly interested in the goodie bags, but the cards receive all the attention and response [from healthcare workers].”

Corrigan hoped learners would appreciate the important role of healthcare workers during the pandemic and learn to express gratitude, be considerate and compassionate.

The Gazette caught a glimpse of some of the cards, heralding the hard-working staff as heroes risking their lives for others.

One card read, ‘Thank you for working beyond breaking point for us. You’re the definition of a hero.’

Another read, ‘Thank you for the countless hours spent every day. Thank you for caring so much about others. Thank you for being so dedicated to us. Thank you for helping our loved ones. Thank you for everything you have done to help. The world really is a better place because of heroes like you.’
