Councillor galvanises residents towards giving to the SPCA

WARD 73 – Through the Noah Can platform, the councillor was able to reach residents and make an appeal.

A food distribution mission in Norwood turned out to be a double success.
Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett shared how a Norwood, Orange Grove and Houghton Community Action Network (Noah Can) food distribution initiative provided her the platform to appeal for donations for the Sandton SPCA.

“On June 19, Noah Can was doing their food distribution. I had seen a plea from the Sandton SPCA for blankets so Noah Can kindly allow me to use the same morning and venue [for my appeal]. I sent out a WhatsApp requesting help and that I would personally deliver the donations. The response from Ward 73 and surrounds was astounding,” said Huggett.

She added that residents arrived with piles of blankets and goods for the animals, many of them brand new.

“I realised that I was not going to fit all this generosity in my vehicle. Ray Knuppel, one or our residents arrived and offered to help transport the goods. At least four carloads were taken through to Sandton SPCA, and I was messaged by residents who had not managed to get to the venue on time, that they had taken further donations through later on in the day. I was assured that all of these [donations] would be shared with other SPCAs.”

Huggett said while she was at the SPCA, she noticed one of the dogs up for adoption. “The very efficient SPCA staff and volunteer, Linda Smith organised for a meet and greet with my other dog… So by June 22, six-month-old Charley Dara was a new member of my family.”

She thanked all the residents for their generosity. “Thank you Noah Can volunteers Emily Wellman and Kathi Brady for stepping in and helping with receiving the donations. Thank you, SPCA for all you do for our lost and abandoned animals.
“A special thanks to the two families of the Labrador and of the Scottie [Zoe] who recently and very sadly passed away. They donated their blankets, beds and food so other dogs in need could benefit and be warm and comfortable.”
