Pressing need for shower facility

PARKVIEW – The project representatives believe cleanliness, which is a matter of dignity and health, will also help them find work.

For many years St Francis Anglican Church, Parkview, has run an outreach programme for homeless and other underprivileged people. The church has done so through activities such as a feeding scheme, shower facility, donations of clothing and an advice office that offers help on such issues as counselling, employment opportunities and identity documents.

According to fundraiser Andrew Forrest, last year during Covid-19 lockdown, the showers closed following lockdown regulations. He added that the number of homeless and unemployed people has increased in the area, with the result that many more are in need. “The church currently provides lunch for more than 100 people each Saturday and again each Sunday, but there is a pressing need for a facility where people can wash themselves and launder their clothing.

“We believe access to a shower and laundry facility is important both in terms of the dignity of homeless people and their chances of finding employment. St Francis relies on the generosity of the parishioners, community and partners to support its projects.”
Forrest added that the church is appealing for donations that will make it possible to re-open the shower and laundry facility two mornings a week. “We are seeking financial donations to employ a caretaker to clean and oversee the facility, and donations of toiletries such as soap, washing powder, towels and facecloths.”

He added that floor cleaners, deodorants, shaving razors, mops and any donation, however small, will make a difference. Forrest shared that the finance required to meet the budget from June until December will amount to R70 700 and the overall costs for 2022 with a 5 per cent increase will amount to R127 260.
