One suspect fatally shot, two others arrested following Lyndhurst business robbery

LYNDHURST – The owner of the supermarket, his assistant and the security officers involved in the incident were unharmed.

One suspect was fatally shot and two others arrested following a shootout with security officers outside a supermarket on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Johannesburg Road in Lyndhurst on 22 April.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said on 22 April at about 6.45pm, it is alleged that two male suspects entered a supermarket pretending to be customers.

“While inside the shop, they pointed firearms at the owner and his assistant and demanded money. The suspects then tied the owner’s hands and feet with wire and took money estimated around R10 000 as well as cigarettes estimated to be worth R12 000,” added Masondo.

He said as the suspects were about to leave the shop, they saw CAP security officers outside the shop and started shooting at the officers as they fled the scene.

“The security officers shot back and chased after the fleeing suspects.”

The suspects fled towards Johannesburg Road where they hijacked a Mini Cooper which was at the nearest garage.

Masondo said the security officers prevented the suspects from getting away while exchanging fire with the suspects.

The suspects then abandoned the vehicle next to the garage and fled on foot.

“One suspect was then fatally shot in the head and died instantly. Two other suspects were apprehended by the security officers.”

Masondo added that two pistols and one revolver were recovered. One of the suspects was also found in possession of R2 300 which was suspected to have been taken from the supermarket.

The suspects were handed to the police by the security officers.

A case of business robbery, attempted murder, hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened at the Sandringham Police Station.

Both suspects were detained at Sandringham Police Station.

The owner of the supermarket, his assistant, and the security officers involved in the incident were unharmed.
