Patients re-directed from Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

PARKTOWN – Patients on chronic medication have been advised to take their scripts to nearest facilities.

The Department of Health is still awaiting a report on the cause of the fire at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. Due to the blaze, patients at the hospital had to be transferred to other medical facilities. MEC for Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana said more than 600 patients had been transferred to Edenvale, Chris Hani Baragwanath, Sterkfontein, Tara, Steve Biko, Tshwane District and Bertha Gxowa hospitals among others. ALSO READ: Firefighters battle re-ignited fire at Charlotte Maxeke She added that the Covid-19 vaccination site was in a separate area from the main hospital and was not affected. The fire broke out in the hospital’s dispensary unit on 16 April and no casualties were reported. The blaze was extinguished on 18 April and the hospital has been closed down for seven days.

Kekana said, “The seven days is for the assessment on the impact of the fire and other issues relating to the fire, further public communication will be made to the public when the seven days lapses.” In a statement released on 18 April, Kekana said arrangements had been made to accommodate planned caesarean and urgent surgeries, and patients on chronic medication were advised to take their prescriptions to the nearest medical facilities for assistance. All bodies from the hospital’s mortuary were transported to Sizwe Tropical Diseases Hospital in Edenvale.
