Firefighters battle re-ignited fire at Charlotte Maxeke

PARKTOWN – The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

A fire erupted at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital’s Special Dispensary Stores in the early hours of 16 April.

The Gauteng Department of Health had earlier on the day stated that the fire had been contained with no casualties but later in the evening at around 8.30pm issued another statement saying the fire had re-ignited.

“The Gauteng Department of Health would like to inform the public that the situation at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital has changed with the fire reigniting.

Firefighters from the City of Johannesburg are currently (16 April 8.30pm) on the scene battling the flames. The hospital has already evacuated patients to other wards that are farther away from the fire. This is being done as a precaution and to protect patients from possible smoke inhalation,” stated the department.

They further indicated that they were also looking at evacuating patients from the hospital to other facilities within the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Cluster (nearby hospitals). The cause of the fire is not yet known. Charlotte Maxeke Hospital Communication and public relations manager Lungiswa Mvumvu shared on the morning of 17 April that Premier David Makhura was on site.

“The situation is developing and we will give updates as and when we are able to,” the statement concluded.
