Audition for the new National Children’s Theatre Youth Choir

PARKTOWN – Youth between the ages of 13 and 17 with a keen interest in singing are invited to prepare the verse and chorus of their favourite song for the audition.

The National Children’s Theatre (NCT) invites young talented singers to audition for the launch of the new NCT Youth Choir on 17 April.

The choir will be under the directorship of specialist vocal coach Christine Ludwig and aims to provide an outlet for talented young singers to perform in a social environment.

Speaking to the Gazette, Ludwig said that she has been assisting with music at the NCT’s Saturday workshops for the past three years and noticed that there are many talented singers in the group with little opportunity to be part of a youth choir.

Youth between the ages of 13 and 17 with a keen interest in singing are invited to prepare the verse and chorus of their favourite song for the audition.

“I’ve always wanted to have a choir of my own and believe that there are few opportunities for children to perform in a choir on a local level,” said Ludwig,

She hopes to establish a prestigious, polished choir that is a mix between the Ndlovu Youth Choir and the Stellenbosch University Choir with a mixed repertoire.

“We will perform anything from contemporary music to musical theatre and classical stuff with a twist,” explained Ludwig.

She said that the choir can include anything from 15 to 100 members. Choir members do not need to know how to read music, though this would be an advantage.

Ludwig said that there is great joy in being part of a choir, particularly now when people are so separated and isolated as a result of Covid-19.

“Choir helps children to learn how to work together harmoniously, learn a new kind of discipline, commitment and be able to perform. It also gives people a sense of unity, togetherness and power.”

Having worked as a music educator for the past 20 years, primarily as a vocal coach, Ludwig has also worked on a number of notable projects including working as the lead music expert and vocal coach on the reality show Clash of the Choirs SA. She also worked with the internationally renowned cast of Africa Umoja and most recently, the unauditioned high school choir that won KykNET’s Sing in Harmonie.

Selected candidates will be required to pay a termly fee of R1 500 and commit to attending weekly rehearsals from 12.30pm on Saturdays.
