NPO continues to improve lives of children

HOUGHTON – With intervention from Childline, the child's behaviour began to improve as she made progress.

Childline Gauteng counsellors are aware that mental health issues have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Childline Gauteng director Lynne Cawood, social challenges such as unemployment, poverty, inequality, criminality and violence are of grave concern for the short- and medium-term health of our youth.

“We do our very best to increase the resilience of our clients to cope with extremely difficult socio-ecological problems,” she said.

“Joy [not her real name) is 11 years old and was referred to us by a children’s home. Joy and her little sister were found in need of care and protection by the children’s court after they were neglected by their mother. The caregivers at the children’s home requested our assistance due to Joy’s inappropriate sexual behaviour.”

She added that through Childline’s intervention, the social worker discovered that Joy had been sexually abused by a boy in her community before she was taken to the children’s home. Through dedicated counselling, the caregiver reported that the child no longer presented with inappropriate sexual behaviour. She also noted that Joy was respectful towards adults and had better boundaries since she started attending sessions at Childline.

“Childline Gauteng is able to assist our valued friends and partners to save tax. By donating to us before 28 February, you will be rewarded with a tax benefit as we are a registered Sars Public Benefit Organisation. We will issue you a Sars 18A certificate to include in your annual Sars returns.

“We thank you for your commitment to helping us to improve the lives of children.”
