Road safety campaign about to intensify

The transport minister, Fikile Mbalula, is about to sign a ground-breaking partnership with alcoholic beverage producer Distell.

This partnership will support the intensified 365 days, “Waya-Waya” national road safety campaign which the minister launched in Polokwane on December 3.

“This intensified campaign will see scores of road safety ambassadors and campaigners throughout Gauteng’s central business districts and surrounding areas joining the minister and the beverage company to amplify the message of road safety.

The partnership, whose details have been formalised through a memorandum of understanding to be signed by the department and Distell, will go beyond the festive season, the reopening of the schools, the Easter holidays and into the new financial year.”

Although the campaign will include all elements of road safety, there will be a special focus on the following:
• No drinking and driving
• Always buckling up
• Promotion of daytime driving
• Vehicle roadworthiness
• Pedestrian visibility.

The details of this partnership will be announced tomorrow at 14:00 after which the minster and his entourage will visit a number of vehicle and pedestrian intersections and driver licensing centres in Gauteng.
