Norwood SAPS bids farewell to captain who served faithfully for 37 years

NORWOOD – Captain Arthur Mphela served as a relief commander, making sure that all complaints were handled well, dockets were properly filed and he attended meetings.

Norwood police bid farewell to a faithful member of the station Captain Arthur Mphela who retired after serving for 37 years at the Norwood Police Station.

Reflecting on his time at the station, Mphela said that he most enjoyed working under Colonel Anton van Jaarsveld in the 1980s.

“I enjoyed working with him and while he was the station commissioner Norwood was recognised as the number one station in Johannesburg. He was so positive and willing to work and all the community loved him. I served with him for seven years.”

He said that even when he was not on duty, he missed working at the station where the people were good and kind.

Mphela served as a relief commander, making sure that all complaints were handled well, dockets were properly filed and he attended meetings.

He explained that it is vital for community members to join hands with police in order to curb crime.

He reflected positively on his relationship with community members and said he would miss working with them, but most of all, he will miss the older colleagues at the station.

Mphela said that he felt despondent about many of the younger police officers. “The young people are not there to work and they don’t work for the community. They are there to collect a salary and as police that should not be a priority.

“New policemen must be dedicated to their work like before and work with the station commander to deal with crime.”

Spokesperson for the Norwood Police Station Sergeant Eric Masotsha commended Mphela for his long service and dedication to the police.

Masotsha said that for all his years of service, Mphela had never received an allegation of corruption against him, which is commendable.

“He is always available to give advice. He is friendly to all and available to help everyone, irrespective of gender. The juniors looked up to him, he was patient with us and led my example.”
