JHF presents: Motown and music virtual tour and talk
JOHANNESBURG – David Gurney will take heritage tour lovers on a trip down Eloff Street this weekend.
Fancy a trip down good old Eloff Street in Johannesburg? The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation has got you covered.
On 10 October at 2pm virtual tourists can embark on a journey with Dave Gurney for an afternoon of song and flashy cars of the fifties and sixties in downtown Joburg.
“The amazing Eloff Street – at the top end is the entry to Johannesburg from the station and at the bottom end is our ‘Motor Town’ and the Bantu Men’s Social Centre and Dorkay House, significant symbols of black artists’ resistance to apartheid during the 1950s and 60s. Join us for a whole new perspective of southern Eloff Street,” said Flo Bird, deputy chairperson of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation.
“Famous names like Chrysler, Williams Hunt for American Chevrolet and Buick cars, Grosvenor Motors for Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, Connocks for British Morris, MG and Riley. We also explore our African jazz roots and hear about famous African jazz musical King Kong.”
Bird reminded residents that these tours are open to all and space may be limited. There is a nominal fee of R40 for fully paid-up members of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Forest Town, Houghton, Norwood, Oaklands, Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff associations. Non-members will need to pay R80 by EFT into the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation account. Residents who have registered and paid will receive the link on 9 October.
The tour begins promptly at 2pm so residents are asked to sign in at least five minutes before the show starts.
