Residents, including anaesthetists gathered in Houghton on 17 September to pay their respects to Doctor Abdulhay Munshi. Dr Munshi was shot dead on 16 September in Orange Grove.
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee first brought the incident to the attention of the public in a tweet where he stated that a Johannesburg doctor had been shot dead in Orange Grove. Abramjee further added that the shooting appears to be a ‘hit’.
Provincial SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters confirmed that police have opened a murder case for investigation following the fatal shooting of a 57-year-old medical doctor on the afternoon of 16 September by unknown suspects in the Norwood precinct.
“Police are at this stage not at liberty to disclose or confirm the deceased’s identity. The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined. The case will be investigated by a multi-disciplinary team on the immediate activation of the 72-hours Response Plan to detect the perpetrators,” said Peters.

In a second tweet, Abramjee added, “The doctor and a colleague made headlines a few months ago after a young patient died in theatre in a Johannesburg hospital.”
At the tribute gathering, Abramjee said, “We know him as a gentle soul. We know him as a man who served with passion, honour and dedication. What happened yesterday in Orange Grove is a very sad indictment on the lawlessness and criminality we are having in this country.”

“If we as communities don’t stand up against these murderers, we will not only be failing the likes of Dr Munshi, but we will be failing ourselves. If anyone has information on who is responsible for this murder, please do the moral thing and blow the whistle,” Abramjee advised.
