WATCH: Mayor and MMC visit zoo ahead of reopening

SAXONWOLD – The Johannesburg Zoo will be open to the public from 1 September after being closed for five months during lockdown.

Joburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo and MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds visited the Johannesburg Zoo on 31 August to assess its readiness before reopening on Spring Day.

Journalist Sarah Koning was there to view the various measures that have been put in place to ensure visitor safety during Lockdown Level 2.

During the tour of the zoo, it was observed that construction was taking place to expand the elephant enclosure into a section that used to house the black rhino. There is also construction taking place elsewhere at the zoo to accommodate a new black rhino enclosure.

MMC Arnolds expressed her appreciation for the hard work of all employees at the Johannesburg Zoo and said she is confident that the facility is ready to welcome the public on 1 September. A number of protocols have been put in place to protect visitors and staff at the facility.
