Liquor stores open in Level 2 lockdown

JOHANNESBURG – Two of our local liquor shops were not as busy as the last time alcohol restrictions were eased.

With the move to lockdown Level 2 also came the opening of bottle stores and liquor shops.

Level 2 was implemented on the morning of 18 August and marked the second easing of alcohol restrictions since the beginning of the lockdown in March.

When liquor stores opened for the first time on 1 June, patrons had filled up the shops in anticipation; this time, however, the same shops that the Rosebank Killarney Gazette had visited were not that busy.

At Savoy Liquors, there was just a moderate number of customers coming in and out with no long queues at all. One of the security guards around said there hadn’t been an overwhelming queue of customers even in the very early hours of the morning and he assumed it was because most people had not been paid yet.

Ultra Liquors in Bramley was moderately busy with only one queue as compared to the multiple queues on 1 June. It appeared smaller bottle store owners were doing most of the purchasing as they loaded lots of alcohol crates into their vans and trucks.
