Two people injured following a business robbery in Joburg Central

JOBURG CENTRAL – Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said that police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they heard gunshots and saw one of the suspects running with a firearm in his hand.

Police arrested two suspects between the ages of 24 and 43 for business robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on the corner of Troye and Rahima Moosa streets on 4 August at 3.30pm.

Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said the suspects allegedly entered the clothing shop pretending to be customers. “They pointed a firearm at the owner and took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register. They also robbed customers that were inside the shop,” explained Mbele.

“[The suspects] fired shots and two victims, a male and a female, were shot in the upper body inside the shop. Victims were taken to a nearby hospital by an ambulance.”

Mbele said that police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they heard gunshots and saw one of the suspects running with a firearm in his hand. “He was cornered on the corner of De Villiers and Claim streets while his accomplice was rescued from the angry community members. Two firearms with live rounds were recovered from the suspects.”

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

Station commander Brigadier Irvin Perumal commended the detectives for arresting the suspects and removing firearms from wrongful hands.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Central Magistrate’s Court soon.
