Two arrested for murder and perjury after opening false hijacking case at Joburg Central Police Station

JHB CENTRAL – Captain Xoli Mbele said that the suspects came and opened a case of an attempted car hijacking. One of the suspects told the police that the deceased and his friends fired shots at him.

Police detectives have arrested two suspects after they attempted to open a false case of hijacking.

The two suspects, aged between 35 and 36, were arrested for murder and perjury on 14 July at 5pm at Johannesburg Central Police Station.

Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, said that the one suspect, the driver of a white VW Polo, allegedly shot and killed a 25-year-old male on the corner of Eloff and Salisbury streets on 11 July at 7pm.

Mbele explained that on the date of the incident, the suspects, while in a car, approached four men who were walking in the street to ask for directions. One of the four men gave directions to one of the suspects in the car while his three friends waited on the corner of the street. The driver of the car then allegedly shot the man who was providing the directions. The man shot immediately fell down in the street. The second suspect, the passenger, then got out of the car and allegedly removed the rear registration of the vehicle before the suspects fled the scene.

The victim was certified dead by paramedics when they arrived at the scene.

Mbele said that the two suspects came to the station and opened a case of attempted car hijacking. One of the suspects told the police that the deceased and his friends fired shots at him. The suspect’s licensed firearm was confiscated for further investigation.

“A dedicated investigating officer went to view the CCTV video footage which showed that all the information given by the suspects was untrue,” said Mbele.

Johannesburg Central Station Commander, Brigadier Irvin Perumal commended the detectives for their good work. He warned criminals that there are cameras in the Johannesburg CBD so suspects that are wanted for crimes committed in the Johannesburg CBD will be arrested. Those who open false cases were also warned that they will face the full might of the law.
