Rosebank Homeless Association assists other temporary shelters during lockdown

Briggs reported that the association is in a sound financial position with cash reserves and minimal liabilities.

The annual general meeting of the Rosebank Homeless Association due to be held in July cannot be held for the time being.

Chairperson of the association Judith Briggs said a virtual meeting would also not work for the people they help; however, all other procedures were being followed with the financial statements having been audited and in the process of being finalised. Regarding the treasure’s report, Briggs reported that the association is in sound financial position with cash reserves and minimal liabilities.

She added, “Two weeks after the end of the financial year we entered our lockdown period which entailed the closing of the Immaculata Shelter and the beginning of a real struggle for homeless people. Other temporary shelters were established and the association’s focus has largely been on assisting these places of safety.”

The chairperson said the sewing project has turned its hand to making masks with new team leader Thembile Maqima whom they hope to see go from strength to strength. With Tessa Weakley as the new chairperson of Bokamoso, the initiative has continued to sponsor needy children, especially those of the Homeless Talk vendors, at various crèches in both Hillbrow, Alexandra and Soweto.

Briggs thanked the Rosebank Management District (RMD) which continues to support the association with a regular monthly contribution. “The RMD also supported the sewing project by commissioning the alteration of security staff uniforms, providing a useful income stream and a good training opportunity.”

The chairperson also expressed her utmost gratitude to the Javett Foundation for their very generous donation, as well as Every Nation Church in Parktown North and also contributions from generous individuals. Briggs said, “At the same time, we would like to make a general appeal to the community to continue to support the less privileged by donating through the collection box, as there are still many needy people on the streets. If anything, now more than ever as the Immaculata Shelter continues to be closed, as are many of the soup kitchens operated by the churches in our area. There have been temporary shelters but they are not able to assist more than a few.”
