For the good of Earth and others

HOUGHTON - Pupils of St John's Preparatory School worked for the good of the land and its people when they visited Orange Farm's Solwazi Primary School.

The school’s community service, public relations and environmental teams used the occasion to plant trees and distribute food, as part of the Take Care Ambassador Garnier programme.

According to St John’s Kate Rodrigues, on arrival at Solwazi, the pupils and parents were divided into work groups by the Miss Earth South Africa team, who were also involved in the initiative.

“The groups then planted 95 trees, one for each year of Nelson Mandela’s life,” she said.

After the tree planting ceremonies, sandwiches and soup were distributed to community members.

The programme, inspired by Mandela’s vision of “building a caring world”, was based on three principles: Take care of yourself, take care of others, and take care of the Earth.
