Stacey Fru (13) shares Home-schooling experience on Covid-19 lockdown

BRAMLEY – There are limited things to do at home and most of us get bored.

Stacey Fru, the young author from Bramley, shared how she and her fellow Grade 8 learners are surviving the national lockdown while home-schooling.

“My dad set up a table, chair and a computer each connected to the Internet for my brother and I,” said Stacey.

“We make sure that by 7.40am every day we were at our desks and logged into the Google classroom with some breaks exactly as in school, until 2.30pm.

“Online or home-schooling has been a huge change and has really challenged a lot of my peers. Teachers are having to make huge adjustments and are facing a lot of challenges too and many students don’t have Wi-Fi and some connections are bad.”

She added that having both her parents and her and her brother in the same room led to a lot of laughs and they have a great time.

“But being on lockdown has its ups and down in my own writing career. I thought that this would be the time my writing would peak, but it seems to be slowing. We have loads of schoolwork to do and since online school is just like live schooling, homework and responsibilities seem more demanding.”

Stacey said she was glad that President Cyril Ramaphosa had put measurements into place to help flatten the coronavirus curve and added that she had a lot of empathy for those who have lost loved ones to the disease.

“I feel pity for many who do not have homes and food. Many parents are losing their jobs also. This is not good.”
